Six Month Smiles vs. Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are the standard way to achieve a straight smile with treatment length ranging from 12 to 36 months or more. In comparison, Six Month Smiles helps patients achieve straighter smiles in a much shorter amount of time. The shorter average treatment length is more convenient for patients with busy schedules than traditional braces.

While traditional braces align all of a patient’s teeth, the Six Month Smiles system concentrates on realigning the teeth that show when smiling. This focus means fewer brackets and wires and less force needed to move the teeth. That equals a more comfortable and enjoyable orthodontic experience. Six Month Smiles also uses clear and tooth-colored materials, which makes them virtually undetectable.

Pros and Cons of Six Month Smiles

The biggest advantage of Six Month Smiles is that treatment time is significantly shorter than traditional orthodontic treatment. Since this treatment requires fewer office visits, it is a convenient option for busy schedules. Another advantage is the inconspicuous look of Six Month Smiles due to its clear brackets and tooth-colored wires. Its less noticeable appearance helps patients feel less self-conscious during treatment.

There are some disadvantages to Six Month Smiles since this treatment system only straightens people’s front-facing teeth. Patients with bite or jaw alignment issues cannot address such problems with this orthodontic option. It is designed to help people with minor orthodontic issues and may not be a good option for people who need more comprehensive treatment.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for Six Month Smiles is 16 years or older. People who can benefit from this system are those looking to correct mild-to-moderate crowded teeth and gaps between the teeth. Patients with severe bite or jaw alignment issues may not be good candidates.

Six Month Smiles is also a good option for patients experiencing a regression in previous orthodontic treatment. Teeth can shift out of alignment if people do not wear their retainers after completing active orthodontic treatment. Fortunately, Six Month Smiles can be an easy way to correct that regression.

“The ideal candidate for Six Month Smiles is typically in their later teen years or is an adult.”

Six Month Smiles Process

The process of getting Six Month Smiles is very similar to getting traditional braces. Before treatment can begin, patients must visit our orthodontist for a comprehensive exam of their teeth, gums, and oral health. If the patient is a candidate for Six Month Smiles, they will have X-rays and a three-dimensional scan or impression of their teeth taken. The impression will be sent directly to Six Month Smiles to create the custom appliance.

Once the appliance is ready, patients will return to our office for bracket and wire placement. Our orthodontist will use a bonding agent to attach the brackets to your front teeth. These brackets will come in a special tray that allows our staff to see exactly where they need to go. Once the brackets are secure, the tooth-colored archwire will be attached and adjusted. Patients will come back every four to five weeks for adjustment appointments until treatment is complete.
