Exploring teeth jewelry options
Teeth jewelry takes the form of small gems or small pieces of gold that attach to the front surface of teeth. Dentists use dental adhesives like bonding to keep the jewelry in place. Fixing the jewelry only takes a few minutes for each tooth. Here are the steps to the procedure, in broad strokes:
- First, the patient and dentist agree on where to put the jewelry
- Then the dentist dries and isolates the tooth that the jewelry will rest on
- They apply a small amount of mild acid to roughen the sport where the jewelry will sit
- After 30 seconds, the dentist rinses off the acid with water before drying the tooth
- The dentist applies a bonding agent. They let it sit for 20 seconds before curing it
- The dentist rinses and dries the tooth once more
- The dentist applies a small amount of dental composite onto the now-dry bonding agent
- They use forceps to pick up the jewelry and place it directly on the dental composite
- Lastly, the dentist applies gentle pressure to the jewel and cures the composite
This whole process should take less than five minutes from start to finish. Five minutes includes patient feedback and adjustments. The painless, non-invasive procedure does not require any anesthetic, and the patient leaves the dentist’s clinic with jewelry that lasts around six months.
Teeth jewel options
Smaller tooth jewels fall in two broad categories, with the first being "twinkles". These are made of yellow or white gold, and they may hold actual gems like diamonds. The second category is "dental gems", which are crystal decorations that come in various colors.
Tooth jewels are small and non-invasive, typically measuring 0.9mm at their thickest, and between 1.8mm and 3.0mm wide.
Larger jewelry options, like the “grills” popularized by hip-hop artists, take up more space. These are often custom, removable pieces that cover multiple teeth simultaneously. A second option is custom braces that come with cleverly positioned adornments.
